Classes in Reading, Math, Writing & Chess

We hold classes in the Puget Sound area through the Redmond Recreation Program and Crossroads Community Center during the summer. Our classes are full of fun, hands-on learning activities, games, songs, puzzles and movement activities designed to help challenge your child in the summer in math, reading, writing and chess.

Classes start in July and are run weekly through August 19. A different series is held each week.
Classes are usually 2 hours long for 5 days each.

MAGIC READING SERIES

See your child excel in reading! Enroll your child in one of
the Magic Reading Series courses to build your child’s
confidence and encourage a genuine interest in the magic
of reading. Classes are taught in small groups. Each Magic
Reading class includes skill building and a reading incentive
program. Also included is a Magic Reading Book Club party on
the last day of the session!

Magic Pre-Reading
This class opens the door to the wonderful world of reading.
Children explore letters, sounds, and site words through playful
songs, games, puzzles, and activities. Students graduate to Magic
Beginning Reading after the successful completion of this class.

Magic Beginning Reading
This class explores blending sounds together using phonetic rules
and sight reading. Children will learn to make words and sentences,
subsequently understanding the meaning of words in the stories and/
or the information they read. Students graduate to Advanced Magic
Reading after the successful completion of this class.

Advanced Magic Reading
This class increases vocabulary and comprehension through more
practice and advanced reading games. Children develop skills to infer
the real meaning behind the story and/or information they read. At
the completion of the Advanced Magic Reading Program, children will
have acquired the needed skills to gain knowledge through reading.

Magic Creative Writing Sessions 1 & 2
See your child excel in Writing! Magic Creative Writing opens
the door to the wonderful world of writing. Students will explore
characters, settings, plots, in Session 1; genres, titles and
dialogue in Session 2. Students will learn about descriptive and
sensory words, transition and action words, overused words and
frequently misspelled words. We will use editing symbols and
both editing and revising checklists. Come have fun with writing,
become a better writer and create your own writing masterpiece!
(You can sign up for session 2 even if you haven’t had session 1.
Sign up for both sessions to cover all of the topics and get more
guided writing practice!)

Magic Explore Math
Build your child’s confidence and encourage a genuine interest
in the magic of mathematics. We’ll explore different math
concepts with lots of fun hands-on games and learning activities.
This class will help your child to build a strong basic foundation
for all future mathematical learning.

Magic Geo Math
Read tangram stories, use large felt pieces, make your own
tangrams and solve tangram puzzles! You’ll also make origami
creations, learn some amazing paper tricks to impress your
family and friends, and solve story puzzles from around the
world. A fun class with lots of math skills games, and a special
snack served in an origami creation on the last day!

Magic Chess Level I
In Magic Chess I beginning players start with the basics and
move up from there. Students are exposed to various tactics,
and they are given an opportunity to apply these skills in real
game play situations with other students in the class.

Magic Chess Level II
In Magic Chess II, intermediate and advanced students will learn
tournament play, timed play, notation and advanced strategies.
They are given an opportunity to apply these skills in real game
play situations with other students in the class.
